Tripura’s innovative water management practices will be prominently featured at the upcoming India Water Week, which begins on Tuesday in Delhi. The Union Panchayati Raj Ministry has selected community efforts from gram panchayats in Tripura to be showcased at the event, highlighting the state’s commitment to sustainable water practices.

The eighth edition of India Water Week, set to take place from September 17-20 at Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam, will present best practices in water management from gram panchayats across India. Tripura’s contributions will include the water conservation and management efforts from the gram panchayats of Vanghmun in Jampui Hills district and Birganj in Gomati district.

The theme of this year’s event, “Partnerships and Cooperation for Inclusive Water Development and Management,” aligns with the Panchayati Raj Ministry’s ongoing initiatives to advance sustainable water practices in rural areas. The ministry is promoting “water-sufficient villages” as part of its Localisation of Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs) through targeted panchayat development plans. The “Water Sufficient Panchayat” theme is one of nine LSDG themes aimed at enhancing water sustainability.

Exhibits at the India Water Week will include a variety of successful water management models. Notable displays will feature Kothar gram panchayat from Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, where a water tank at the base of a mountain supplies nearby villages via a pump house. The innovative approach of Keinou gram panchayat in Manipur, which provides RO+UV treated water through Water ATM kiosks, will also be highlighted.

Other exhibits will showcase community-driven water management efforts from gram panchayats such as Chiluvuru (Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh), Hiware Bazar (Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra), Bajarwada (Wardha district, Maharashtra), and Khursapar (Nagpur district, Maharashtra).

The participation of these well-performing panchayats underscores the collaborative spirit and practical solutions being developed across India to ensure water sufficiency. Representatives from these gram panchayats will attend as delegates to share their successful strategies and learn from others at the event, organized by the Jal Shakti Ministry.
