In Tripura, the opposition INDIA bloc has launched a scathing critique against the ruling BJP, branding it as a “burden of the society” and predicting a widespread rejection of the NDA in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections based on the responses garnered during pre-election campaigns.
Sudip Roy Barman, a Congress Working Committee member and co-convener of the Tripura INDIA bloc, expressed optimism about the prevailing sentiments among the electorate, both in Tripura and across the nation. He emphasized a palpable desire for change, citing disillusionment with the incumbent government, and demanded transparency regarding the BJP’s track record of achievements and future plans.
Alleging the BJP’s reliance on intimidation tactics, including vandalism, assaults, arrests, and purported misuse of central agencies, Roy Barman underscored grave concerns about the state of democracy and the Constitution under the BJP’s governance. He urged the Election Commission to ensure the conduct of free and fair elections, stressing the imperative of unimpeded voter participation.
In response to BJP’s criticisms of the Left-Congress alliance, Jitendra Chaudhury, co-convener of the INDIA bloc, acknowledged historical conflicts between the two parties but condemned what he perceived as the BJP’s assault on democracy. He accused the BJP of harboring individuals with criminal backgrounds from the past and emphasized ideological disparities between the Left and Congress, while underscoring areas of common ground on national issues.
Chaudhury also lambasted the BJP’s alleged attempts to rewrite history and undermine democratic institutions, cautioning of severe repercussions if democracy were compromised. Despite ideological differences, he highlighted collaborative efforts by Left parties and Congress during the independence movement.
The Lok Sabha seat-sharing arrangement sees Ashish Kumar Saha of the Congress contesting from Tripura West, while the CPI-M has nominated its former MLA from Tripura East.
