The Mizo residents of Jampui Hill have urged Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu to expedite the change of the community’s name from “Lushai” to “Mizo” in the ST list/Presidential list of Tripura.
The appeal was made to the Governor when he visited Jampui Hills on Wednesday. The Mizo community leaders under the banner of Mizo Convention of Jampui Hills submitted a memorandum to the Governor in which besides the change of the name they also urged him for resumption of the process of introduction of Mizo language subject in Tripura University. They pointed out that the proposal for this had been already submitted as advised by University authority.
“Introduction of Mizo language subject in Tripura University will benefit a vast population of students in Tripura who have been adopting Mizo language as their lingua franca and save them from the compulsion of taking up English or Bengali language subject which they find very difficult. There are readily available and well developed Mizo textbooks and literature for the curriculum and syllabus” the Mizo elders pointed out.
One other important demand that the Mizo Convention put forward was finalization and enactment of the Mizo Customary Law that had already been passed at the TTAADC Session. The proposal was now pending for State Cabinet’s approval and the Governor’s approval. The memorandum was signed by Convention’s president L Sailo and general secretary Dr Z Pachuau.
