Meghalaya, Tripura, and Manipur marked their 52nd Statehood Day with vibrant cultural programs and events on Sunday, showcasing the rich heritage of the regions.
In light of the prevailing law and order concerns, the celebrations were relatively low-key in Manipur, where around nine months of ethnic violence have left an impact.
Nevertheless, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh took the opportunity to address the state’s main function, emphasizing the significance of unity and progress.
Leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and others, extended greetings to the people of these states.
Modi, in separate messages, conveyed heartfelt wishes to Tripura, acknowledged Manipur’s significant contributions to India, and celebrated Meghalaya’s unique culture.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi, along with Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, also extended warm wishes to the residents of the three states.
In Tripura, the main Statehood Day function took place in Agartala, where Chief Minister Manik Saha honoured intellectuals and dignitaries for their outstanding contributions to various fields.
Responding to Prime Minister Modi’s post, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed optimism, stating, “Under your leadership and guidance, we will ensure Meghalaya reaches new heights of peace and progress.”
The three states—Meghalaya, Tripura, and Manipur—officially attained full-fledged statehood on January 21, 1972, under the North Eastern Region (Re-Organisation) Act, 1971. The day was marked with a series of programs, including welfare initiatives and developmental plans, reflecting the commitment of these states to future progress and prosperity.
Despite the challenges, the states have outlined extensive welfare programs and development plans, underscoring their commitment to progress and prosperity.
The celebrations reflected the unity in diversity and resilience of the northeastern region, emphasizing the cultural richness and achievements of the three states.
