In a somber turn of events, the dawn in Ramnagar -2 broke with palpable sadness as the news of BJP MLA Surajit Datta’s passing, affectionately known as ‘Sunu da,’ spread throughout Tripura. The demise of the charismatic and compassionate political figure has left thousands in mourning, reflecting the deep connection he forged with the people.

Surajit Datta’s unique political journey, spanning several decades and political affiliations, was marked by an outpouring of emotions from the grieving public. The teary-eyed gatherings in Ramnagar -2 saw discussions ranging from Sunu da’s early adventures and political career to the thousands of anecdotes highlighting his legendary helpfulness, compassion, and support for people from diverse backgrounds.

Despite his political transitions—from his Naxal days to joining Congress, Trinamool Congress, and ultimately BJP—Sunu da’s ability to win the hearts of the people remained unparalleled. His popularity cut across political lines, making him a unique and beloved figure in Tripura’s political landscape.

The state government declared a day of State Mourning on Thursday, leading to the closure of shops and business establishments as a mark of respect for the departed leader. Thousands of mourners gathered at MBB Airport and Sunu da’s residence in anticipation of his mortal remains, which were flown in from Kolkata.

Surajit Datta’s health struggles, particularly with kidney complications, diabetes, and high blood pressure, were well-known. Despite these challenges, the veteran politician continued to serve the public, earning respect and admiration. His sudden downturn in health two days ago led to his admission to a Kolkata hospital, where he succumbed to his ailments on Wednesday night.

On Thursday, the mortal remains of the seven-time MLA were brought to Agartala, where Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu and top leaders from ruling and opposition parties paid their final tributes. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed deep condolences, acknowledging Sunu da’s unique contributions to the state politics.

“He was a seven-time legislator from Ramnagar and also served as a minister. His helping nature and love towards the common people are known to all. I have never seen a leader like him in the state before,” said Chief Minister Dr. Saha.

Leaders from various political parties, including Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Leader of Opposition Animesh Debbarma, and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, expressed their condolences, highlighting Sunu da’s significant contributions.

The mortal remains were then taken to the Pradesh BJP headquarters in Krishnagar, Agartala, where State BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee and other party leaders offered rich tributes to the departed leader.

“The death of the political legend is a great loss to the party. Sunu da joined BJP ahead of the 2018 assembly polls and fought towards establishing the Bharatiya Janata Party in Tripura. The contribution of Surajit Datta towards the party and the people of the state will be remembered as an ideal example of a political leader,” said State BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee.

The final journey concluded with the cremation of Surajit Datta at the Battala crematorium, where a large number of people thronged the roads to bid farewell to the veteran politician. Sunu da’s legacy lives on, not only as a political figure but as a symbol of unity in grief that transcends political boundaries in Tripura.
