112 children screened for congenital heart disease at RBSK camp, 65 need surgery. Early detection drive by Apollo Children’s Hospitals team highlights urgent pediatric heart care needs, improving survival chances through timely diagnosis and advanced treatment access.
A two-day intensive screening camp for congenital heart disease (CHD) concluded successfully on March 25 and 26 at IGM Hospital & Nursing Institute, under the flagship initiative of the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK). The health drive brought hope to dozens of families as early detection and expert evaluation identified critical cases requiring timely intervention.
Congenital heart disease refers to structural defects in the heart that are present at birth. These conditions can severely impact a child’s health if left untreated, often affecting feeding patterns, breathing efficiency, growth rate, and overall development. However, medical experts emphasized that with early diagnosis and modern treatment methods, most CHD cases can be effectively managed or cured.
During the camp, a specialized cardiac team from Apollo Children’s Hospitals, Chennai, carried out comprehensive clinical examinations and cardiac assessments. The camp saw participation from all eight districts of the state, with children being referred through coordinated efforts of RBSK field teams, ensuring extensive outreach even in remote areas.
A total of 112 children underwent screening over the two-day period. Among them, 65 children were identified as requiring surgical intervention, highlighting the seriousness of undiagnosed CHD in the region. Additionally, 34 children have been advised to remain under observation with scheduled follow-up care, while the remaining cases showed no immediate signs of critical concern.
Health professionals involved in the camp stressed the importance of recognizing early warning signs. Symptoms such as rapid or labored breathing, poor weight gain, fatigue during feeding, and bluish discoloration of lips or nails should prompt immediate medical attention. Early intervention can significantly improve survival rates and quality of life.
The successful execution of this screening initiative underscores the importance of proactive public health programs in addressing pediatric health challenges. By bridging gaps in early diagnosis and connecting patients with advanced treatment facilities, initiatives like RBSK continue to play a vital role in safeguarding the health of children across India.
