Assam mourns music icon Zubeen Garg as schools, colleges, and government offices shut for his funeral tomorrow. The state ensures a dignified farewell with strict security, traffic restrictions, and ceremonies conducted according to the family’s wishes.

Assam is set to bid a final farewell to its legendary singer Zubeen Garg, with schools and colleges across the state remaining closed on Tuesday. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the closure as a mark of respect for the iconic musician, whose last rites will be performed on the outskirts of Guwahati.

In addition to educational institutions, all government offices in Kamrup district will also remain closed for the day. This decision reflects the profound impact Zubeen Garg had on the people of Assam, not only as a musical icon but also as a cultural ambassador for the state.

Talking to reporters, CM Sarma outlined that the funeral procession will be conducted with simplicity and dignity, in accordance with the family’s wishes. Only a limited number of vehicles will accompany the ambulance carrying Garg’s mortal remains. Alongside the ambulance, a small bus carrying his wife, close relatives, and friends will travel, while no other vehicles will be part of the procession. Sarma emphasized that the journey from the airport to the cremation ground will be carried out smoothly, just as his body was received in Guwahati.

Upon reaching the cremation site, the mortal remains will be escorted by Assam Police pallbearers from the highway to the venue. A guard of honour and a gun salute will be accorded before the priest conducts the final rites, in keeping with the family’s instructions. “His family members are in touch with the priest, and once they arrive, the rituals will be conducted as they decide. We will abide by their directions,” Sarma said.

To ensure a smooth and orderly farewell, the government has implemented strict security and traffic measures. No vehicles will be permitted to enter from the Jagiroad side, although vehicles heading towards Meghalaya will be allowed passage. Traffic from the Jorabat side will also be restricted for four to five hours to facilitate the ceremony.

The state government had previously announced official mourning until Tuesday for the passing of the music maestro, underscoring the deep sense of loss felt across Assam.

Zubeen Garg’s mortal remains reached his hometown on Sunday morning, sparking an unprecedented outpouring of grief as thousands lined the streets to catch a final glimpse of their beloved icon. His body, flown from Delhi on a commercial flight, arrived at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport around 7 A.M., after being transported from Singapore, where he tragically passed away on Friday following a swimming accident.

Several dignitaries, including CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, and senior state officials, were present at the airport to receive the body and pay their respects. Notably, CM Sarma personally received the singer’s mortal remains at Delhi airport on Saturday night, highlighting the significance of Garg’s contributions to Assamese music and culture.
