In a shocking incident, a female Tehsildar, Pompa Deb Kanangu, was stabbed by her husband, Jewel Dutta, in her office in Dharmanagar. The victim was rushed to the GB Hospital trauma center in Agartala as her condition turned critical. The Tehsildar was carrying out her duties in the Dharmanagar Tehsil Office when her husband entered her room and attacked her with a knife in the presence of her colleagues. Prior to the stabbing, Dutta forcefully took her mobile phone. Kanangu was initially taken to Dharmanagar District Hospital with the assistance of fire service personnel, and later shifted to GB Hospital for specialized treatment. The police promptly arrested Jewel Dutta at the scene, seizing the knife used in the attack. Kanangu has alleged that her husband had been subjecting her to physical abuse on multiple occasions.

Following the distressing incident, the SDM of Dharmanagar, along with other officials, visited the victim at the hospital to provide support and assess her condition. Women’s Commission Chairperson Barnali Goswami also arrived at GB Hospital to meet Kanangu and obtain her statement. Goswami assured the victim that the Women’s Commission would stand by her throughout the ordeal and ensure that appropriate action is taken against those responsible. She affirmed that the incident is currently under investigation, and Kanangu’s husband remains in police custody.

The Women’s Commission, committed to safeguarding the rights and well-being of women, will continue to offer assistance and support to the injured Tehsildar until the resolution of the case. Chairperson Barnali Goswami emphasized that those found guilty of the heinous act will face legal consequences. The commission is determined to bring justice to Kanangu and hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the persisting challenges faced by women in society. It calls for concerted efforts to address issues related to domestic violence and ensure the safety and security of women in all walks of life. The authorities and organizations like the Women’s Commission must work collectively to create a conducive environment where women can thrive without fear of violence or harm.
