In West Bengal, the leader of the opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, and three other BJP MLAs have been suspended from the Assembly today for a period of 30 days or until the current sitting of the session continues.

Earlier, when the house sat for today’s business, BJP demanded a statement from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the issue of alleged resistance to Saraswati Puja at various educational institutions this month. Women members of the BJP, led by Agnimitra Paul, moved an adjournment motion on this issue.

Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay allowed the motion but denied permission to hold a discussion on it. BJP members, led by the Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, then went to the well of the house. The Speaker expressed his displeasure at the conduct of the BJP MLAs. BJP MLAs walked out of the house and demonstrated outside the Assembly.

The chief whip of the ruling Trinamool Congress, Nirmal Ghosh, introduced a resolution criticizing the conduct of Suvendu Adhikari and other BJP MLAs, demanding appropriate measures against them. The resolution was then passed in the house with a voice vote, suspending Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, Agnimitra Paul, Biswa Nath Karak, and Bankim Ghosh.
