Werder Bremen staged a dramatic comeback to draw 2-2 against Borussia Dortmund as Niclas Fullkrug scored a stoppage-time equaliser. The result ended Dortmund’s perfect Bundesliga start, leaving them top with 13 points while Bremen climbed to fourth.
Werder Bremen produced a dramatic late comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund on Friday, with Niclas Fullkrug scoring a stoppage-time equaliser against his former club. The result ended Dortmund’s perfect start to the Bundesliga season after four consecutive victories and prevented the league leaders from extending their winning run
Dortmund entered the match looking to maintain their impressive form, dominating possession during the opening stages. However, Bremen remained organised defensively and made it difficult for the hosts to create clear scoring opportunities.
The visitors produced their first significant chance in the 37th minute when Ludovit Reis advanced through the centre and fired narrowly wide of the goal. Dortmund responded with a free kick from Marcel Sabitzer, whose effort went just past the post.
Bremen goalkeeper Karl Hein also played an important role in keeping his team in the contest. He denied Maximilian Beier after an intelligent pass from Ethan Nwaneri, helping the visitors reach half-time without conceding.
Dortmund increased the pressure after the break, with Nico Schlotterbeck and Nwaneri threatening the Bremen defence in quick succession. Hein continued his impressive performance by making another crucial save to deny Nwaneri from close range.
Nwaneri later appeared to score with an acrobatic overhead kick, but the effort was ruled out after the referee had already stopped play for an attacking foul. At the opposite end, Fullkrug came close to putting Bremen ahead, but Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel successfully kept out the striker’s attempt.
Despite Bremen’s resistance, Dortmund eventually broke the deadlock in the 80th minute. A swift counterattack created the opportunity for Daniel Svensson, who finished from close range to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The home side strengthened their position just five minutes later. Schlotterbeck rose above the defence to head home Joey Veerman’s corner, putting Dortmund 2-0 ahead and seemingly securing another victory for the Bundesliga leaders.
However, Bremen refused to surrender and demonstrated the fighting spirit that had helped them recover from a two-goal deficit to defeat Augsburg two weeks earlier.
The visitors reignited the contest in the 88th minute when Reis found the net with a strike that went in off the inside of the post. The goal reduced Dortmund’s advantage to 2-1 and gave Bremen renewed hope of salvaging a point.
The closing moments delivered the decisive drama. During stoppage time, Marco Gruell delivered a free kick into the penalty area, where Fullkrug rose to head the ball past Kobel. His late equaliser made it 2-2 and completed Bremen’s remarkable comeback against his former team.
The result had a significant impact on the Bundesliga standings. Dortmund remained at the top with 13 points from five matches, while Werder Bremen moved into fourth place with eight points. Bayern Munich and Freiburg were three points behind Dortmund, with a match in hand, as the fifth round continued.
For Dortmund, the draw represented a missed opportunity to maintain their winning momentum. Despite controlling much of the match and establishing a two-goal advantage late in the second half, defensive lapses in the closing stages proved costly.

Bremen, meanwhile, earned valuable points through persistence and an effective late response. Fullkrug’s equaliser was particularly significant as it came against his former club and secured a memorable result for the visitors.
Dortmund will next travel to face Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League before returning to Bundesliga action against Union Berlin. Werder Bremen will prepare to host Paderborn in their next league fixture.
