Must Read

It is high time that people of the country should learn once again how to read and speak Sanskrit and an all-out endeavor should be taken collectively, and individually, for making the nation once again a world leader in all spheres on the basis of best of wisdom, values, ethics, humanity and knowledge-all that can be derived from this classical language, said Niti Deb, General Secretary of leading NGO Purvaudaya.

She was delivering her speech at a function relating to the release of the book ‘ Janaki Harana Janaki  jibana mahakabyajugalashya Tulnatmak odhyanam’ based on Sita’s life, ideals, values etc authored by Sanskrit scholar and Assistant Professor of National Sanskrit University Dr Bulti Das at Press Club on Wednesday.

Deb rued that despite Sanskrit being a treasure trove of ancient wisdoms that covered all known domains of human knowledge and learning and also being the mother pillar of great Santan civilization of India, people forgot how to read and speak the language. And thus also lost touch with the rich roots that he or she should be proud of. Now, as it happened, all that came from relatively new Western world were accepted without question and that process eventually sought to mould the national psyche.

“It is now time that we must explore and take a relook at our history, our great past. And for that reading and speaking Sanskrit in its original form must be learnt. It is necessary to understand and imbibe the wisdoms in their essence that are written in Sanskrit”, she said.

She felt that while the institutional support for such endeavor would be helpful, individually also people should take their own efforts to learn the language.

“We cannot escape from our own responsibility. What is good, what carries values and virtues that must be spread by everybody- to every corner” Deb added quoting Guru NanakDev ji.

Deb exhorted the young generation to come forward in this regard and bring back the glory that once our civilization radiated world over-the glory that was long remained veiled due to our indifference and neglect to such a great language- our rich heritage.

Prog GP Prasain, Vice Chancellor of Tripura University in his speech also dwelt on the importance of Sanskrit.

“I felt disappointed at the way Sanskrit is being taught in state’s schools. The script used for Sanskrit is Bengali and the language is also taught in Bengali. This is not acceptable. Sanskrit must be taught in Sanskrit and its script must be Devnagari”. Said Prof Prasain. He said Tripura University was looking into the matter and some decisions in this regard might be taken soon.

Among other Prof Shyamal Das, Dean of Arts and Commerce, Prof Devraj Panigrahi and Prof Chandan Kumar Chakrabarty , Press Club secretary Pranab Sarkar also spoke on the occasion.

Author Dr Bulti Das expressed her gratitude to all the professors who guided her in attaining the PhD and also to pen down her research paper in the book format.
