Pradyot Dhar Chowdhury, an undertrial accused in the Vicky murder case, died at GBP Hospital in Agartala. His family has raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding his death and demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Pradyot Dhar Chowdhury, an undertrial prisoner accused in the high-profile murder case of Durga Prasanna Deb, popularly known as Vicky, died under circumstances that his family has described as suspicious at Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala. Following his death, the family has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his hospital admission and alleged delays in receiving medical attention, demanding a judicial inquiry into the incident.

According to information available, Dhar Chowdhury had been lodged in jail for approximately two years while the trial in the murder case was underway. He was reportedly admitted to GBP Hospital after developing health complications. His family members were subsequently informed about his hospitalisation, but they said they learnt of his death only after reaching the hospital.

Dhar Chowdhury was also a former secretary of Bharat Ratna Sangha. Durga Prasanna Deb, who later became the organisation’s secretary, was the victim in the murder case in which Dhar Chowdhury was facing trial.

Speaking to reporters, the deceased’s nephew expressed concern over the sequence of events leading to his uncle’s death. He alleged that the family received information about the hospital admission but was informed of the death when relatives arrived at the facility.

The nephew further claimed that, during discussions with doctors, the family was told that police personnel had been asked to sign a document as part of the formalities required to begin treatment. According to his account, the police officials allegedly declined to sign the document, resulting in a delay of around two hours before medical attention was provided.

The allegations have not been independently verified, and the circumstances surrounding the reported delay remain unclear. An official account from the hospital and police regarding the treatment process and the reasons for the alleged delay was not included in the information available.

The family also questioned why Dhar Chowdhury had suddenly required hospitalisation. His nephew said relatives had not received a clear explanation of the circumstances that led to the health emergency or the cause of death.

“We are totally clueless about the cause of death and hence from our family we are demanding a proper judicial inquiry,” the nephew said, calling for a transparent investigation into the incident.

The death has raised questions for the family about the medical care provided to an undertrial prisoner while in custody. However, the precise cause of death, the nature of the health complications and the sequence of medical treatment have not been established in the available account.

A judicial inquiry, as demanded by the family, could examine the circumstances of the hospital admission, the alleged documentation issue, the timeline of medical intervention and the events preceding the death.

Further clarification from the concerned authorities and medical officials would be necessary to establish the facts surrounding the incident. The family’s allegations remain claims pending independent verification, and the cause of death has not been confirmed in the information provided.
