US Trade Delegation to Visit Sri Lanka Next Week on Reciprocal Tariff Implementation

Must Read

A delegation from the Office of the United States Trade Representative is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka next week to assist authorities in finalising modalities for implementing reciprocal tariffs. Washington has imposed a 20 per cent tariff on Sri Lankan goods under  President Donald Trump’s global tariff programme, a rate similar to that imposed on Bangladesh, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Pakistan.

According to U.S. trade data, total goods trade with Sri Lanka reached $3.4 billion in 2024, with a deficit of $2.6 billion. Colombo has pledged to increase purchases from the U.S. to narrow the gap, including testing American WTI crude oil as an alternative to Murban. The visiting USTR team is expected to focus on the technical aspects of tariff implementation.
