US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is headed to Israel for an official visit amid tensions with fellow American allies in West Asia over Israel’s strike on Hamas leaders in Qatar’s capital city, Doha.
According to Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, he and Rubio will visit the Western Wall together in Jerusalem today. Speaking to reporters before departure, Mr Rubio reiterated that the US President Donald Trump was not happy about the strikes. He said the US relationship with Israel will not be affected, but he will discuss with Israel how the strike would affect President Trump’s desire to secure the return of all the hostages held by Palestinian armed group Hamas, get rid of the militants and end the Gaza war.
After Israel, the US Secretary of State is due to join President Trump’s planned visit to Britain next week.
