US President Donald Trump has sued the Wall Street Journal and its owners including Rupert Murdoch for at least ten billion dollars, over the newspaper’s report that his name was on a 2003 birthday greeting for Jeffrey Epstein.
The lawsuit filed in Miami federal court says they defamed Trump and caused him financial and reputational harm. Trump has also instructed the US Justice Department to file a motion in Manhattan federal court to unseal grand jury transcripts in the Epstein case and that of his former associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who in 2021 was convicted of five federal charges.
Epstein died by suicide in a New York jail in 2019. His case has generated conspiracy theories that became popular among Trump supporters who believed the government was covering up Epstein’s ties with the rich and powerful. Trump has said he parted ways with Epstein before his legal troubles became public in 2006. The Wall Street Journal owner Dow Jones said it will vigorously defend against Trump’s legal action.
