Two police personnel have been suspended in Mizoram on Saturday for their alleged involvement in extorting money from drivers at various police check-gates.

Sub Inspector (SI) of Police and Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) were suspended following an inquiry into the allegations of taking money from non-tribal truckers at Mizoram-Assam border Vairengte town.

Officer-in-charge of Vairengte Police and six constables were also transferred from the police station.

This action was taken in response to a circular issued by the Mizoram government, instructing police personnel to refrain from engaging in corrupt practices.

Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga said that while the new government will not indulge in witch-hunting, anyone who breaks the law will be punished in accordance with the law.

I have said that the Home Department will spearhead a transformation in government administration, ensuring the public witnesses the emergence of Kalphung thar, a new system in government, Sapdanga posted on his X handle.

We place significant emphasis on the proper enforcement of the rule of law, and we underscore the need for a robust Reward and Punishment Mechanism. As articulated by the Chief Minister, while the government does not seek to investigate and penalize past transgressions in politics or administration, it is imperative to halt such practices moving forward, he added.

Preliminary inquiry found that two Police officials were taking money from non-tribal truck drivers at Vairengte Police check-gate while further investigation may result in suspension of more police personnel.

He said that in order to maintain rule of law, there should be reward and punishment mechanism.

The Home Minister, who had earlier visited all the Police check-gates at Mizoram-Myanmar border Champhai district, Mizoram-Assam border Kolasib district and Mizoram-Tripura district, had warned that any official taking money at the check-gates will not be tolerated.

The state home department also issued a stern warning on January 4 that such illegal acts are taken seriously by the state government and appealed for giving information to the authorities if witnessing such illegal acts.
