Tripura’s power sector has seen transformative growth since 2018, with major infrastructure upgrades, new sub-stations, and solar initiatives. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlights plans for uninterrupted electricity in hospitals, drone surveillance, and a ₹1,800 crore modernization project to strengthen the state’s power grid.

Tripura’s power sector has undergone remarkable growth and modernization since 2018, according to Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a newly constructed 33 KV Sub-Station in Ranir Bazar under the Majlishpur assembly constituency, Minister Nath highlighted the significant strides taken by the state government in improving power infrastructure, expanding consumer reach, and embracing modern technologies to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

The new sub-station, developed under the North Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP), has been completed at a cost of ₹10.70 crore. It is part of a broader effort to upgrade the state’s power transmission and distribution capabilities. The minister emphasized that plans are also in motion to provide separate power lines for all hospitals in the state to prevent disruptions during emergencies.

“Since 2018, Tripura’s power landscape has changed drastically,” said Nath. “We have not only increased consumer connections but also introduced advanced technologies like prepaid and smart meters, underground cabling, and drone surveillance.”

Nath pointed out that the number of power consumers in the state has increased from 7 lakh in 2018 to 10.31 lakh in 2025—a jump of 3.31 lakh in just seven years. In comparison, he said, the previous regime could only establish 12 33 KV sub-stations in 35 years, while the present government has successfully set up 20 new sub-stations.

The transmission network has also seen a significant boost. The length of 132 KV lines has doubled from 485 km to 986 km. Similarly, the number of 33 KV sub-stations has increased from 42 to 74, and 11 KV sub-stations have risen from 16,821 to 21,598. The underground cabling network has expanded from just 95 km to 571 km.

“In the past, we had no prepaid or smart meters. Now, we have installed 1,61,700 prepaid meters and 71,946 smart meters. This is the result of a forward-thinking approach toward energy management,” Nath added.

The Minister also stressed the importance of curbing illegal electricity connections, commonly referred to as ‘hook lines,’ which adversely affect regular consumers. “We will soon deploy drone technology to identify these illegal connections and introduce live line maintenance systems to reduce downtime during repairs,” he said.

Another major highlight of his address was the government’s plan to supply uninterrupted electricity to hospitals across the state. “Power will be supplied separately to Ranirbazar Hospital, and similar plans will be extended to other hospitals as well to ensure continuous electricity, especially during critical times,” he stated.

The state is also working on a ₹1,800 crore modernization project aimed at upgrading its power transmission infrastructure. As part of this initiative, nine new 132 KV sub-stations are being constructed, of which eight have been completed and one is nearing completion. Moreover, the capacities of seven older sub-stations are being enhanced, and advanced cable technology is being integrated into existing lines, particularly the Agartala 79 Tilla to Rukhia route.

Looking ahead, the Power Department is planning to construct a 400 KV sub-station at Suryamaninagar. This initiative is expected to significantly strengthen Tripura’s internal power grid and support the state’s future energy demands.

Minister Nath concluded his address by reiterating the government’s commitment to sustainable energy development, stating that due to the decreasing availability of natural gas and coal, the state is now prioritizing solar power connections in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national energy vision.

The developments in Tripura’s power sector stand as a testament to the state government’s resolve to provide reliable, modern, and efficient electricity services to its citizens.
