The India International Science Festival (IISF) 2024, a four-day mega event, is underway at the prestigious IIT Guwahati from November 30 to December 3. The festival has brought together scientists, innovators, students, and artisans from across the country to celebrate advancements in science and technology.

ISRO Chairman Dr. S. Somnath visited the festival and was presented with a unique bamboo-crafted model of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). This creative fusion of science and sustainability was developed under the guidance of Dr. Abhinav Kant at the Bamboo and Cane Development Institute (BCDI) – NECTAR, Agartala, Tripura.

Dr. Kant described the model as an innovative representation of India’s space technology combined with the traditional craftsmanship of Tripura, utilizing bamboo as a sustainable and eco-friendly material.

Dr. Somnath expressed his admiration for the craftsmanship and eco-conscious design, saying, “The Launch Vehicle is very close to my heart, and this bamboo-made product is an ideal memento for a souvenir.”

He further lauded the effort and highlighted the potential of using bamboo in creating such meaningful products. Dr. Somnath also expressed his desire to explore collaborations for developing more such bamboo-based creations in the future, promoting sustainability and innovation.

The bamboo GSLV model serves as a symbol of India’s commitment to integrating traditional craftsmanship with modern science, emphasizing the importance of sustainable materials in contemporary innovations.

The IISF 2024 continues to showcase diverse exhibits and initiatives, reflecting the synergy between science, culture, and sustainability.
