Tripura will soon host India’s first 120 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant at Rokhia, using Siemens SGT-800 turbines for the first time in the country. Funded by ADB and executed by MEIL, the eco-friendly project promises efficient, affordable, and sustainable power generation.

Tripura is poised to take a giant leap forward in the power sector with the upcoming establishment of India’s first-ever 120 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant at Rokhia. The initiative, spearheaded by Tripura Power Generation Limited (TPGL), marks a historic moment for both the state and the nation, promising to revolutionize electricity generation using cutting-edge, eco-friendly technology.

Funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the project aims to maximize electricity output without increasing fuel gas consumption. By leveraging environmentally sustainable technology, the plant will ensure a reliable and affordable power supply for consumers, while also minimizing its environmental footprint.

A Milestone in India’s Power Sector

This CCGT power plant is the first of its kind in India, setting a new benchmark in power generation technology. Through a global e-tendering process, Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) emerged as the lowest bidder, offering a project cost of INR 1,119.30 crore (excluding GST). The Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract has already been signed between TPGL and MEIL, signaling the start of a major infrastructure push in Tripura.

The plant’s configuration will follow the advanced 2GT+2HRSG+1ST model, consisting of two Gas Turbines, two Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), and one Steam Turbine. This arrangement will significantly enhance operational efficiency and output capacity.

Introducing Siemens SGT-800 Turbines to India

One of the most groundbreaking aspects of the Rokhia CCGT project is the introduction of Siemens Energy AB’s SGT-800 gas turbines to India. Each turbine, with a capacity of 57 MW under ISO conditions, is known for its outstanding efficiency and advanced start-stop capabilities. These turbines will be installed in an Indian power plant for the very first time, underlining the project’s pioneering nature.

MEIL will execute the project in close collaboration with Siemens, ensuring that the plant incorporates the latest technological advancements for optimal performance.

High-Level Project Inspections and Commitments

On August 11, a six-member delegation from MEIL and Siemens visited the Rokhia project site to assess the groundwork and planning. They were joined by TPGL officials and project proponents, who provided detailed insights into the project’s implementation roadmap.

The following day, the Siemens team held discussions with TPGL Managing Director Biswajit Basu in Agartala. During the meeting, Siemens representatives reaffirmed their commitment to delivering high-performance turbines capable of meeting both base load and peak load requirements for Tripura’s growing power demands.

Impact on Tripura’s Energy Landscape

Once operational, the Rokhia CCGT power plant will substantially increase Tripura’s power generation capacity, moving the state closer to self-reliance in electricity production. It is expected to improve grid stability, reduce dependency on external power sources, and create a benchmark for similar projects across India.

The introduction of advanced CCGT technology will also pave the way for more environmentally sustainable power generation methods in the country. The plant’s efficiency-driven approach will help conserve natural gas while producing more power per unit of fuel, making it both economically and environmentally advantageous.

A Vision for the Future

The Rokhia CCGT project stands as a testament to Tripura’s growing importance in India’s energy map. It blends advanced engineering, international collaboration, and a commitment to clean energy — all key elements for sustainable development in the 21st century.

By bringing the SGT-800 turbines to India and implementing the nation’s first 120 MW CCGT plant, Tripura is not only addressing its own power needs but also creating a model for other states to follow. Once completed, the project will mark a transformative chapter in India’s journey towards modern, efficient, and sustainable energy infrastructure.
