A tragic incident has shaken the northeastern community as Anjel Chakma, a final-year MBA student from Tripura, died early Friday after enduring weeks of treatment following a brutal racially motivated attack in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
Anjel, a student at Jigyasa University, suffered severe injuries during an attack on December 9 in the Selaqui area of Dehradun. According to reports, Anjel and his younger brother, Michael Chakma, a student at Uttaranchal University, were assaulted by a group of youths allegedly under the influence of alcohol while they were out buying groceries.
The attackers reportedly hurled racial slurs and derogatory remarks targeting the brothers’ ethnic appearance before physically assaulting them. Michael sustained a head injury after being struck with a kada (metal bracelet), while Anjel was stabbed in the neck and abdomen, resulting in life-threatening injuries.
Following the assault, Anjel was rushed to Graphic Era Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit, where he battled for life for several weeks. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries around 4 a.m. on Friday, leaving the community devastated.
The police have acted swiftly, arresting five suspects named Avinash Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khawas, Ayush Badoni, and Sumit in connection with the attack. Authorities have confirmed that further investigation is ongoing to bring all responsible parties to justice.
