Tripura Showcases Tourism Transformation at National Conference in Udaipur

The second day of the two-day National Conference of State Tourism Ministers in Udaipur, Rajasthan, featured a compelling address by Tripura’s Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, who highlighted the remarkable transformation of the state’s tourism sector under the current administration.

In the presence of Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and tourism ministers from across the country, Chowdhury underscored Tripura’s unique geographical identity — bordered by Bangladesh on three sides — and lamented the neglect of the sector by previous governments.

“There was no sincere effort to boost Tripura’s tourism before the BJP government came to power in 2018,” Chowdhury stated.

Crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s leadership, he said Tripura has rapidly emerged as a promising tourist destination in the Northeast. Citing recent data from the Ministry of Tourism, Chowdhury noted that Tripura now ranks among the top Northeastern states in foreign tourist arrivals — a major milestone for the state.

He also appealed to Union Minister Shekhawat for “guidance and support for the holistic development of Tripura’s tourism sector,” emphasizing that nearly two-thirds of the state is forest-covered, offering immense potential for eco-tourism. Several eco-destination projects, he said, are being developed under an integrated tourism plan.

Tripura Tourism Secretary U.K. Chakma presented an overview of the state’s diverse attractions, highlighting key destinations such as Ujjayanta Palace, Neer Mahal, Unakoti, Tripura Sundari Temple, Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, Chabimura (the ‘Amazon of the Northeast’), and Dumboor Lake.

Chakma also noted that Tripura houses the second-largest airport in the Northeast, named after a Tripura king, which offers direct connectivity to Delhi, Kolkata, and other major cities.

He announced seven new tourism projects to further accelerate growth, including:

  • A state-of-the-art Adventure, Eco-Tourism, and Water Park at Sachindranagar Colony, Jirania, inspired by Kolkata’s Nicco Park.

  • Laxmilunga Snow Village and Tea Experience Centre, Ludhua.

  • Adventure Park, Mohanpur.

  • Floating Villas at Neer Mahal.

  • Dumboor Lake Mandir Ghat and Islands Project.

  • Jampui Hills Tourism Development.

Ongoing initiatives include the redevelopment of the Tripura Sundari Temple, inaugurated by PM Modi on September 22, 2025, along with infrastructure upgrades at Chabimura and Unakoti, waterfront development in Amarpur, and the Paryatan Sahayak Prakalp entrepreneurship scheme to empower local tourism stakeholders.

Highlighting the results of these efforts, Chakma shared that domestic tourist arrivals rose by 64.07% to 601,000, while foreign tourist arrivals increased by 36.15% to 91,000 between 2023 and 2024.

“This growth, driven by improved infrastructure and proactive governance, has positioned Tripura as the second most-visited Northeastern state by foreign tourists, trailing only Sikkim,” he said.
