State Election Commissioner (SEC) Saradindu Chaudhuri announced that preparations are underway for the upcoming three-tier Gram Panchayat elections in Tripura, scheduled to take place in the last week of July.
Chaudhuri stated that the final electoral rolls, reflecting voters as of January 1, 2024, will be published on June 24, ahead of the elections for Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, and Zilla Parishads.
“We will be proposing to the state government the scheduling of the three-tier Gram Panchayat elections for the last week of July. The current five-year term of the Gram Panchayats is set to conclude in the next two to three months,” said SEC Chaudhuri.
With a commendable move towards gender inclusivity, 33 percent of seats are reserved for women across the 606 Gram Panchayats, 35 Panchayat Samitis, and 8 Zilla Parishads, totalling 6111, 419, and 116 seats, respectively.
Regarding elections in 587 village committees within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Chaudhuri mentioned a pending case in the Tripura High Court concerning these committees.
“We anticipate a verdict from the High Court soon. Following the court’s decision, necessary steps will be taken to conduct elections in the village committees of TTAADC areas,” the SEC stated.
