The Tripura government has approved the recruitment of 1,615 teachers, including 915 Post Graduate and 700 Graduate Teachers, to strengthen education in government schools. This move, announced by CM Manik Saha, aims to improve secondary education and address the acute teacher shortage across the state under the National Education Policy.
In a significant push towards improving the quality of school education, the Tripura government has announced the recruitment of 1,615 teachers for government-run schools across the state. This move aims to address the long-standing shortage of teaching staff in secondary and higher secondary institutions, and it is being seen as a key step in the government’s broader education reform agenda.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday. Out of the total posts approved, 915 positions are for Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs) who will be appointed to teach Classes 11 and 12, while the remaining 700 posts are for Graduate Teachers (GTs) for Classes 9 and 10.
Announcing the decision, Tourism and Transport Minister and government spokesperson Sushanta Chowdhury said, “The Council of Ministers today approved the recruitment of 1,615 teachers across Tripura’s government schools. This includes 915 Post Graduate Teachers and 700 Graduate Teachers. The aim is to improve the student-teacher ratio and ensure quality education for all students.”
Chief Minister Manik Saha also took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his views on the development. “State cabinet approves recruitment of 700 Graduate Teachers (GT) to strengthen our education system and ensure quality education for all. We are committed to providing employment opportunities and march for the Shrestha (best) Tripura,” he posted.
In another post, the Chief Minister added, “A major boost for secondary education in Tripura! The state cabinet has approved the recruitment of 915 Post Graduate Teachers (PGT) for Classes 11 and 12 across the state. This crucial move will help address the shortage of qualified teachers and enhance the quality of education for our students.”
The recruitment drive is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in letter and spirit. Recently, the Chief Minister launched the Tripura School Quality Assessment and Accreditation Framework (TSQAAF), a quality assessment framework aimed at improving the standards of school education.
Highlighting the importance of education as a transformational tool, Saha emphasized, “Education is not just about acquiring formal certificates; it’s a vital catalyst for instilling moral values in life. Tripura has already taken robust steps to implement the National Education Policy. The School Education Department is working tirelessly to create a healthy, competitive environment, transforming each school into a centre of excellence.”
Through TSQAAF, schools will be assessed and ranked based on a set of parameters, including infrastructure, teaching quality, and student performance. This is expected to foster healthy competition among institutions, motivate teachers, and empower students to achieve academic excellence.
According to the Education Department, the recruitment of these new teachers will be conducted transparently and based on merit. Notifications for applications are expected to be released soon, and the process will follow all necessary guidelines laid down by the education and recruitment authorities.
Stakeholders from across the education sector have welcomed the government’s move. Educationists believe this large-scale recruitment will bring much-needed relief to overburdened teachers currently managing multiple subjects due to staff shortages.
“Appointing 1,615 qualified teachers is a landmark decision. It will significantly ease the pressure on existing faculty and help maintain the desired teacher-student ratio as per national norms,” said a senior official from the School Education Department.
The move is also expected to generate new employment opportunities for educated youth in the state, providing them a stable and respected career path in public service.

With this initiative, the state government reinforces its commitment to uplift the education sector and fulfill its goal of making Tripura’s schools more competitive, inclusive, and quality-driven. The new recruitments will not only enhance classroom teaching but also play a critical role in shaping the future of thousands of students across the state.
As Tripura takes progressive steps under the guidance of the NEP, the government’s decision to hire more teachers is being viewed as a foundational step in building a stronger, more inclusive education ecosystem.
