The Election Commission has announced the assembly Election to the Legislative Assemblies of Tripura and also Meghalaya and Nagaland today. The elections will be held on February 16 and the counting will be held on March 2, said the Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar in New Delhi in a press conference.

With this, the Model Code of Conduct comes into force with immediate effect in the three poll-bound North Eastern states.

The poll schedule was finalized by the ECI after taking into consideration all relevant  aspects like climatic conditions, academic calendar, board examination, major festivals, prevailing law and order situation in these States, availability of Central Armed Police Forces, time needed  for movement, transportation and timely deployment of forces and in-depth assessment of other relevant ground realities.

The Commission, after considering all relevant aspects has decided to recommend to the Governor of Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland and to issue notifications for the General Election under the relevant provisions of the Representation  of the People Act, 1951.

The poll schedule :

Date of Issue of Gazette Notification -21st January (Saturday),

Last Date of making nominations- 30th January (Monday),

Date for Scrutiny of Nominations- 31st January, (Tuesday),

Last date for the withdrawal of Candidatures -2nd February (Thursday), Date of Poll -16th February (Thursday),

Date of Counting 2nd March, (Thursday),

Date before which election shall be completed- 4th March (Saturday)

It was the first round of the assembly elections to nine state assemblies this year. And all these state elections are crucial for the fact that they will also play a determining role in the next  Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
