In a response to the catastrophic flooding that has severely impacted Tripura, the State Government has declared the entire region a “Natural Calamity Affected Area.” The declaration follows extensive damage estimates surpassing Rs 15,000 crore and a tragic loss of life.

According to the latest figures, the devastating floods and subsequent landslides have claimed the lives of 32 individuals, with two more injured and one person reported missing. The widespread destruction has prompted the activation of 346 relief camps across the state, providing shelter to approximately 52,906 displaced individuals. The District Administration is diligently working to offer essential relief, including food, drinking water, and medical aid. Efforts to prevent waterborne diseases include regular cleaning of sanitation facilities, disinfectant spraying, and maintaining a hygienic environment in the shelter houses.

In response to the crisis, the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT), led by Joint Secretary B. C. Joshi from the Ministry of Home Affairs, arrived in Tripura for an on-the-ground assessment. The IMCT engaged in preliminary meetings with state officials and received a comprehensive briefing on the flood situation and preliminary damage assessment. The team subsequently visited South Tripura and Gomati Districts to conduct a detailed evaluation of the damage.

To streamline relief operations, Prashant Badal Negi, Director of the Tourism Department, has been appointed to coordinate with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for the collection and redistribution of donated relief materials. A detailed plan has been devised in consultation with the District Nodal Officer to ensure that aid reaches those in need efficiently.

Health concerns remain a priority as medical teams have conducted 1,271 visits to various relief camps, treating 37,596 individuals. Additionally, 1,867 health camps have been organized, benefiting 43,887 people. The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation has implemented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to manage solid waste, wastewater, and ensure safe sanitation practices, aimed at mitigating health risks and promoting recovery in affected areas.

On the infrastructure front, power supply has been restored to 100% in 18 power divisions. However, waterlogging continues to affect power supply in six other divisions, including South Tripura, Gomati, and Sepahijala Districts, with restoration efforts expected to be completed in 2-3 days as water levels subside.

Educational institutions have also been affected, with 4,734 schools reopening, while 163 remain closed in four districts: Dhalai (14), Sepahijala (33), Gomati (65), and South Tripura (51). Anganwadi Centers (AWCs) have resumed operations, with 9,278 AWCs functioning and ‘Take Home Ration’ being distributed in 934 centers. Ten AWCs are still submerged and will reopen once conditions improve.

The Labour Department has taken a significant step to support the affected workforce. In response to the severe impact on laborers’ livelihoods, a one-time financial assistance of Rs. 4,000 per registered construction worker has been approved from the labor cess. This aid will benefit 42,981 registered construction workers across the state, totaling Rs. 17.20 crore.
