Tripura has achieved a significant milestone in renewable energy with solar power generation in the state crossing the 6 MW mark under the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Muft Bijli Yojana. Officials said the state is now aiming to reach 10 MW of solar generation by March next year.

Managing Director of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), Biswajit Basu, said the rapid progress reflects growing public participation and confidence in rooftop solar systems. “We are confident of surpassing the target of 10 MW within March,” he said.

The scheme has evoked an overwhelming response across the state. So far, 17,131 electricity consumers have registered for rooftop solar installations, and solar panels have already been installed in 1,762 households. These rooftops are now functioning as mini power plants, jointly producing over 6 MW of electricity every day.

Besides meeting their own power needs, many consumers are earning additional income by selling surplus power to the grid. As many as 187 consumers have already sold excess electricity to TSECL, earning a total of ₹53,514, which has been directly credited to their bank accounts.

Officials said the initiative is not only reducing electricity bills but also promoting self-reliance and environmental sustainability, with rooftop panels becoming a familiar sight from rural areas to urban neighbourhoods.

With the progress under the Prime Minister’s rooftop solar scheme, Tripura is positioning itself as an emerging green-energy state, combining clean energy generation with household-level economic benefits.
