The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has called on the state government to provide immediate compensation and rehabilitation for victims of recent communal violence in Gandacherra. At a press conference held at the Pradesh Congress headquarters, TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha criticized the BJP-led state government and the police administration for their handling of the situation.

Saha highlighted an incident from the previous Monday where he, along with three other Congress leaders, including Sudip Roy Barman, was prevented from entering Gandacherra village by police. “The administration initially permitted our visit to the affected region but later blocked us. They claim peace and tranquility in the area, yet they are not allowing opposition leaders to visit,” Saha stated.

Saha questioned the authorities, “If there is normalcy in the region, why were we stopped from visiting?” He further pointed out the inconsistency, noting, “Just days after the violence, BJP ministers and leaders were allowed to visit and interact with the local populace. If everything is now normal, why are we barred from the area?”

During the press conference, Saha presented video footage and images depicting the challenges faced by the affected locals, alleging that the situation resulted from a ‘planned conspiracy by the ruling BJP.’ “The party is trying to turn Tripura into a second Manipur for vested political interests,” he claimed.

Saha also called for transparency and open dialogue on the issue, criticizing the police’s role. “The victims believe that had the police acted more responsibly, the violence could have been avoided,” he said.

The TPCC president demanded that the state government take effective steps, including providing adequate compensation, permanent rehabilitation, assistance in rebuilding houses, and enhanced security arrangements in Gandacherra.

“The common people in the area are suffering, and it is the government’s duty to ensure their safety and well-being,” Saha emphasized.
