Tripura celebrated its first State-Level Chakma Language and Script Day with a colourful rally in Agartala. Minister Santana Chakma highlighted the importance of preserving the Chakma language, script, indigenous identity, cultural heritage, and linguistic diversity for future generations across the state.
Tripura witnessed a historic celebration on Friday as the state observed its first-ever State-Level Chakma Language and Script Day, marked by a vibrant rally and cultural programmes that highlighted the importance of preserving indigenous language, script and cultural heritage. The colourful procession, which began from Astabal Ground and concluded at Rabindra Bhavan, attracted a large gathering of members of the Chakma community, cultural enthusiasts, students and supporters of linguistic diversity.
The event reflected the state’s commitment to protecting and promoting the rich traditions of its indigenous communities while encouraging greater awareness about the importance of mother tongues in preserving cultural identity.
Minister for Industries and Commerce Santana Chakma led the programme and addressed the gathering, stressing the significance of language and script in maintaining the identity of a community. She remarked that “script is the torchbearer of culture, and language is the foundation of identity,” underlining the vital role of linguistic heritage in preserving traditions for future generations.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said that India is renowned for its unity in diversity, where people belonging to different communities coexist while preserving their unique languages and customs. She added that Tripura is also home to several indigenous communities, each possessing distinct cultural traditions, languages and scripts that contribute to the state’s multicultural identity.
Santana Chakma stated that the celebration of the first State-Level Chakma Language and Script Day was aimed at sending a strong message that the Chakma language deserves equal importance and continued development alongside other languages spoken across Tripura. She expressed hope that such initiatives would inspire younger generations to learn, use and promote their mother tongue with pride.
The rally presented a colourful display of Chakma culture, with participants dressed in traditional attire carrying banners and placards promoting linguistic pride. Cultural performances showcasing traditional music and dance added vibrancy to the event, while slogans encouraging the preservation and promotion of the Chakma language echoed throughout the procession.
Participants described the state-level recognition of Chakma Language and Script Day as a significant milestone in the community’s efforts to safeguard its linguistic and cultural heritage. Many expressed optimism that the initiative would encourage greater inclusion of the Chakma language in educational institutions, literature, cultural programmes and other public platforms.
