Tripura Bags National Honour for Excellence in Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign 2.0

Tripura has earned national recognition for its outstanding performance in the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0, conducted under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP). The state was awarded in the Best Performing States (Smaller States Category), reflecting its consistent efforts in promoting public health and safeguarding the younger generation from the harms of tobacco.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha took to social media to share the proud moment. “Tripura (NTCP, NHM Tripura) has been recognized as one of the best performing states in the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0,” he announced. Expressing his appreciation, Dr. Saha wrote, “Our relentless efforts in tobacco control and youth engagement have earned national appreciation. Congratulations to all the health workers, educators, and volunteers who made this possible.”

The Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0 is a flagship initiative under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that aims to create awareness among school and college-going youth about the harmful effects of tobacco use. It promotes preventive strategies, behavioral change communication, and grassroots-level mobilization to reduce tobacco consumption, especially among adolescents.

Tripura’s recognition stems from its multi-pronged approach that included school sensitization programmes, formation of tobacco-free educational institutions, awareness rallies, street plays, and youth-led advocacy campaigns across districts. The involvement of the National Health Mission (NHM), Tripura, along with the State Tobacco Control Cell, district officials, and civil society groups, played a crucial role in this achievement.

Dr. Saha further urged the people of the state to keep the momentum going. “Let us continue our collective journey towards a healthier, tobacco-free future for our youth. Every step we take today shapes the wellbeing of tomorrow’s generation,” he said.

Officials from the Health Department also confirmed that Tripura will intensify its efforts under NTCP to cover more schools, colleges, and rural youth in the coming months.

The award has boosted morale across departments and is seen as a testament to Tripura’s growing leadership in public health initiatives in the northeastern region.
