Tripura is poised for a significant transformation in its horticultural sector, as the state government has undertaken several initiatives to enhance farmers’ income and production. Minister for Agriculture Ratanlal Nath highlighted the government’s commitment to this sector during a review meeting held at the State Horticultural Research Station in Nagicherra on Monday.
Acknowledging the vital contribution of agriculture to the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), Nath emphasized that the government has prioritized horticulture, with a budget allocation of Rs. 130 crore for the current year. The minister paid tribute to late Agronomist Baharul Islam Majumder during his visit to the horticulture complex.
One of the focal points discussed during the meeting was the introduction of Advanced Raised Cultivation (ARC) for potato farming, aimed at increasing farmers’ profitability and production. Nath reiterated the government’s determination to make Tripura self-sufficient in horticulture through innovative farming techniques and research-driven strategies.
Addressing concerns of farmers affected by floods, the minister announced additional compensation for crop losses caused by sand deposition on agricultural land. An assessment has been completed, and compensation ranging from Rs. 2,200 to Rs. 18,000 per farmer, based on land measurement, will be directly transferred to the beneficiaries’ accounts.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Apurba Roy, Director Phanibhusan Jamatia, deputy directors from all districts, senior officials, and agriculture scientists. The experts provided insights into enhancing crop yields and operational efficiency, reinforcing the importance of research in driving horticultural development.
Deliberations during the session also included future strategies to boost productivity, adopt modern cultivation methods, and implement sustainable practices. The government aims to ensure a significant leap in the horticulture sector, benefiting both farmers and the state’s economy.
Minister Nath expressed optimism about the initiatives, stating that if the targets are achieved, Tripura will emerge as a leading state in horticultural self-sufficiency and production.
