Tripura has initiated a comprehensive highway safety action plan following a landmark Supreme Court order issued after two fatal road accidents in Rajasthan and Telangana that claimed 34 lives. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury chaired a high-level meeting to implement stricter road safety measures, improve infrastructure, and enhance inter-departmental coordination.

The Tripura government has initiated a comprehensive action plan following a landmark directive issued by the Supreme Court of India. The move comes in response to the apex court’s historic order aimed at preventing road accidents on national highways and expressways across the country.

The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of two devastating road accidents that occurred in November 2025 in Rajasthan’s Phalodi district and Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district, where a total of 34 people lost their lives. Hearing Suo Motu Writ Petition (Civil) No. 9/2025, titled In Re: Phalodi Accident vs National Highways Authority of India & Others, the court issued a landmark order on April 13, 2026.

The court’s directive focused on addressing critical safety concerns on national highways and expressways, including illegal encroachments, unauthorized parking, and deficiencies in road safety infrastructure. The order emphasized the need for coordinated efforts by road authorities, transport departments, law enforcement agencies, health services, and district administrations to prevent future tragedies.

Responding swiftly to the Supreme Court’s directions, Tripura Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury chaired a high-level hybrid meeting at the Secretariat’s VC Hall on Tuesday. The meeting brought together senior officials from multiple departments, including Home, Transport, Health, Public Works Department (PWD), Rural Development, Urban Development, Revenue, and Panchayat departments.

District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police from eight districts of the state also participated in the meeting, along with Traffic Police officials and representatives of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). The objective was to formulate an effective strategy for implementing the Supreme Court’s directives and strengthening highway safety mechanisms throughout the state.

During the meeting, officials reviewed existing road safety measures and discussed several initiatives to improve highway security. These included stricter monitoring of illegal roadside activities, removal of unauthorized parking zones, enhancement of traffic management systems, installation of safety infrastructure, and improved coordination among various government agencies.

Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening emergency medical response systems for accident victims. Officials highlighted the importance of ensuring timely medical assistance and efficient rescue operations to reduce fatalities resulting from road accidents.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility requiring collective action from government agencies, enforcement authorities, and citizens alike. He urged all stakeholders to implement the Supreme Court’s directives with sincerity and urgency.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let us work together to build a safer Tripura by adhering to the Supreme Court’s directive in letter and spirit,” the minister said.

Officials noted that the state’s proactive response represents a major shift in its approach to road safety governance. By aligning with the Supreme Court’s vision and national road safety objectives, Tripura aims to significantly reduce accident rates and improve public confidence in highway infrastructure.

The initiative is expected to strengthen accountability among departments while promoting safer travel conditions for commuters. As implementation progresses, Tripura’s efforts could serve as a model for coordinated road safety management and accident prevention across the region.
