Train services between Assam, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram have resumed after a week-long disruption due to landslides in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. Northeast Frontier Railway restored the Lumding-Badarpur hill section with tireless efforts from engineers and workers, ensuring smooth travel during the challenging monsoon season.

After nearly a week of complete disruption, train services connecting the northeastern states of Assam, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram with the rest of the country have been fully restored. The disruption was caused by multiple landslides in the Dima Hasao district of Assam, which had severely affected the Lumding-Badarpur hill section of the Lumding division under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).

According to officials from NFR, both goods and passenger train operations have now resumed normally at the Jatinga Lampur location, where the railway track had been badly damaged. Train movement was partially restored over the Lumpur-New Haflong stretch on Sunday, and full services began again from Monday.

The NFR, in its official statement, confirmed that the Lumding-Badarpur section had been rendered inoperative since June 23, following torrential rains that triggered multiple earth slips. These slips led to damage and obstruction of the railway tracks, bringing transportation to a halt and disrupting the supply of essential commodities to the northeastern states.

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, said that the Lumpur-New Haflong section was among the worst hit. “Continuous rainfall caused multiple landslides, severely affecting this critical railway line and halting both passenger and freight services,” he noted.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava visited the affected site to monitor and expedite the restoration work. His on-site assessment and leadership ensured that maximum manpower and machinery were deployed immediately. Under his guidance, restoration teams worked around the clock to clear debris, repair the tracks, and resume safe train operations.

The swift action taken by engineers, technicians, and railway workers helped ensure that this vital lifeline for the northeast was reopened with minimal further delay. “The dedication of our engineering and technical teams played a key role in restoring the disrupted section. They worked tirelessly, day and night, despite difficult weather and terrain,” Sharma added.

During the disruption, the NFR had to cancel, divert, and short-terminate many scheduled trains, causing inconvenience to thousands of passengers. Despite this, the railway authority expressed its gratitude to the people of the region for their patience and cooperation during the tough period.

Officials stressed the importance of remaining vigilant, especially during the monsoon season, which brings recurring challenges to railway operations in the region. Engineers and monitoring teams have been deployed across the entire Lumding division to ensure early detection and rapid response to any future landslides or track damage.

Historically, the northeastern states of India — particularly Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and parts of Assam — face frequent disruptions during the monsoon months of June to September. Landslides, waterlogging, and track damage are common during this time, often cutting off these states from the rest of the country for days or even weeks. Such interruptions not only affect daily commuters but also create significant supply chain disruptions, impacting the availability of essential goods in these landlocked states.

NFR officials have advised passengers to stay informed about the latest updates by following official railway communication platforms. All efforts are being made to maintain normalcy in train operations and avoid further delays in service.

The restoration of services comes as a major relief to the residents of the northeastern states, who rely heavily on rail connectivity for travel and goods transportation. The revival of train operations through the Lumding-Badarpur section re-establishes a critical link for the region, especially amid the ongoing monsoon-related challenges.
