As expected in both the Boxanagar and Dhanpur seats BJP candidates won with massive margin against their rivals CPM candidates.

The elections were held on September 05 last.

In Boxanagar BJP’s Tofajjal Hossain got 34,146 votes in his kitty while CPM’s Mizan Hossain got only 3, 909 votes. That gave Toffajjal Hossain a big margin of 30,237 votes.

This constituency got about 66 per cent mulism votes.

In Dhanpur BJP’s Bindu Debnath pooled 30,017 votes and CPM’s Kaushik Chanda found 11,146 votes in his favour. The margin thus stood at 18,871 votes.

This constituency did have a good number of tribal votes.

Boxanagar had earlier been a political forte of the CPM. It is from where Mizan’s father Samsul Haque had been elected in the last election. His death necessitated the bye election to this constituency.

Dhanpur had also been a CPM bastion from where former Chief Minister ad Politburo member Manik Sarkar used to return to the Assembly. It was BJP’s woman leader Pratima Bhowmik—also MoS in the Union ministry, first wrested the seat in last assembly polls. However, she resigned from the seat and Dhanpur had also to go for bye elections on September 5 last.

The CPM which had got electoral support from the Congress after the bye polls alleged ‘rigging’ and boycotted the counting today.

TIPRA Motha did not support any party and allowed its supporters to chose the candidate on their own.

The victory of the two BJP candidates strengthened the ruling party’s position in the assembly -with total number of their legislators now being 34.

All the senior political leaders of the BJP greeted the two BJP victors.  Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha tweeted : , “I thank the people of Boxanagar & Dhanpur assembly constituencies for this landslide victory of Bharatiya Janata Party in the bye-polls. This victory represents the people’s continuous faith in PM Shri @narendramodi Ji & @BJP4India President @JPNadda Ji, We shall continue to work to fulfill the people’s aspirations.”
