Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has strongly advocated for the implementation of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, emphasizing its potential to strengthen democracy, boost voter turnout, and provide significant economic benefits.
Speaking at a discussion session held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala, Dr. Saha highlighted the advantages of holding simultaneous elections across the country. He pointed out that conducting elections multiple times in a year leads to unnecessary financial burdens and disrupts essential services, particularly in education.
“Whenever an election takes place, schools are used as polling stations, leading to their closure. If elections are conducted once every five years, it will ease this burden and ensure uninterrupted education,” he said.
Dr. Saha further argued that One Nation, One Election would relieve common citizens from frequent electoral processes. “Casting a vote once in five years is a relief for the people. If elections are held frequently, it causes inconvenience and disrupts governance,” he added.
The Chief Minister also underscored the financial advantages of the initiative, stating that election-related expenses could be significantly reduced. “Conducting elections throughout the year demands a huge amount of funds. If we streamline the process, we can save a major share of revenue and use it for developmental projects under the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat,’” he said.
Dr. Saha also criticized past governments for neglecting the business community, asserting that the political shift in Tripura has ensured their voices are heard. “During the Left Front rule, businessmen were treated as enemies of society. Under PM Modi’s leadership, they have gained respect, and their issues are now being addressed,” he stated.
He emphasized that the proposal would not only stabilize governance but also prevent policy paralysis caused by the frequent enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct. “Every time an election is announced, the government is restricted from making policy decisions. A unified election system will remove these obstacles,” Dr. Saha noted.
The Chief Minister concluded by reiterating his strong support for the initiative, stating that it is essential for a more efficient democratic structure. “One Nation, One Election is the need of the hour. It will encourage voter participation, strengthen democracy, and ensure economic stability,” he affirmed.
