The Tripura Legislative Assembly witnessed significant unrest on Thursday during the second day of the Monsoon Session, as Opposition members from the CPM and Congress staged a walkout. The protest occurred over the adoption of a congratulatory motion thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for securing a third consecutive term in office.
The motion, moved by Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen during the reference period, not only congratulated Modi but also acknowledged the newly elected members of the 18th Lok Sabha and the citizens who participated in the election. However, this sparked objections from the Opposition.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, backed by CPM and Congress MLAs, argued that such a motion should have been finalized through the Business Advisory Committee meeting. As the debate escalated, opposition members stormed the well of the House before eventually walking out, protesting the Speaker’s decision to proceed without prior consultation.
Despite the opposition's objections, the motion was passed by the Assembly. It praised the NDA government’s commitment to national unity, public welfare, and innovation since 2014. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratanlal Nath, addressing the Assembly, confirmed that the motion would be forwarded to the central government.
