A clash between Tipra Motha supporters and surrendered militants at Khowai Chowmuhani left several injured, triggering tension and police deployment after a dispute over a road blockade following nomination filing for Village Committee polls.
Several people were injured after a clash broke out between supporters of the Tipra Motha party and a group of surrendered militants at Khowai Chowmuhani under Hezamara block on Saturday, triggering tension in the area and prompting police deployment.
The incident reportedly occurred when a Tipra Motha candidate and his supporters were returning after filing their nomination papers for the upcoming Village Committee elections. Their group encountered a road blockade organised by a section of surrendered militants and returnees.
According to Tipra Motha leaders, the candidate and his supporters were attempting to pass through the area when they were asked to avoid the blocked road and use an alternative route on foot. What began as an argument between the two groups soon escalated into a physical altercation and subsequently developed into a clash.
Several people sustained injuries during the confrontation. Among those reportedly assaulted and injured was Alendra Debbarma, a former leader associated with the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), who was involved in leading the road blockade.
Tipra Motha leaders alleged that the confrontation intensified after their candidate and supporters were prevented from passing through the area. They also claimed that several people fled from the spot in panic as the situation turned violent.
However, police sources cited a different sequence of events. According to the sources, the confrontation allegedly began after members of the returnees’ group used obscene language against women supporters of the Tipra Motha party who were travelling inside vehicles accompanying the candidate. The alleged exchange of words reportedly heightened tensions before the physical confrontation took place.
Alendra Debbarma, who was among those leading the blockade, was reportedly escorted out of the area by his personal guard following the clash, according to sources.
The injured individuals were rescued and taken to a local hospital, where they received medical treatment. The exact number of injured persons was not immediately available.
Following the incident, security personnel were deployed in the area to prevent any further escalation. Police intervention helped bring the situation under control, although tension reportedly remained in the locality.

The clash has sparked political discussion over the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly as it occurred shortly after the Tipra Motha candidate submitted nomination papers for the Village Committee elections.
