‘Thansa Divas’ was celebrated in North Tripura to mark Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Debbarma’s birthday, promoting tribal unity and youth sports. Tribal leaders distributed sports kits and announced a free football tournament to empower indigenous youth and discourage substance abuse through cultural and community engagement.

In a colorful display of unity, cultural pride, and youth empowerment, ‘Thansa Divas’ was celebrated with great enthusiasm on Friday at the Noagang Bazar Shed in North Tripura. The event marked the 47th birthday of Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma and brought together a vibrant gathering of tribal communities, leaders, and youth organizations.

The celebrations served not only as a birthday commemoration but also as a platform to strengthen community bonds and promote cultural consciousness among the indigenous people of Tripura. The theme of the event revolved around “thansa”—meaning unity—emphasizing collective efforts for the progress and empowerment of indigenous communities in the state.

One of the major highlights of the event was the proactive involvement of the Youth Tipra Federation (North District), which organized a special initiative targeting the younger population. As part of this effort, football jerseys, gloves, and footballs were distributed to seven different village councils. According to the organizers, this gesture was aimed at promoting sportsmanship, discouraging substance abuse among the youth, and fostering a lifestyle centered around health, discipline, and teamwork.

To further engage and motivate the youth, organizers announced a sub-zonal football tournament scheduled to take place in the near future. This tournament will be open to all participants free of charge and will offer prize money along with other attractive awards. The presence of a state minister is anticipated at the event, underlining its significance and government support for indigenous youth development through sports.

The ‘Thansa Divas’ celebration witnessed the participation of several influential tribal leaders and social workers. Among the notable attendees were Youth Tipra Federation District President Khokan Tripura, prominent social activist Jaychung Ranglong, Damchhara Sub-Zone Chairman Tasiram Reang, Noagang Sub-Zone Chairman Mukamlal Halam, and Sandhyamali Debbarma from the Youth Tipra Federation Central Committee. Their presence signaled a strong, united front in support of community initiatives and cultural preservation.

The event was jointly organized by a number of key indigenous bodies, including the Youth Tipra Federation, Tipra Women Federation, Indigenous Students Federation, Tipra Motha Minority Cell, and Tipra Citizens Federation. The collaboration among these organizations exemplifies the growing sense of unity and collective action within the tribal communities of Tripura.

It is worth noting that the Tipra Motha Party, under the leadership of Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, has emerged as a formidable political force in Tripura. In its debut performance during the 2023 Tripura Assembly elections, TMP contested 42 out of the 60 seats and won 13, making it the second-largest party in the Assembly. This performance positioned TMP as a key player in Tripura politics and a significant ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The BJP-IPFT alliance had secured 33 seats in the 2023 elections, with BJP claiming 32 and its ally IPFT winning one. Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM), which once held a dominant position in the state, was reduced to third place with 11 seats. The Congress party, once a national heavyweight, managed to secure only three seats in the state.

The celebrations of ‘Thansa Divas’ thus carried not only cultural and social significance but also political undertones, reflecting the growing influence of TMP and the rising expectations from the leadership of Pradyot Debbarma. As Tripura navigates its evolving political landscape, initiatives like these are instrumental in bridging community development with political participation, especially among the youth and indigenous populations.
