Tension gripped the premises of Birganj police station as local villagers demanded the handover of murder suspect Sankar Jamatia, alias Bijoy (34), leading to a clash with law enforcement.
Bijoy was apprehended on Monday night in connection with the brutal killings of Pushparani Jamatia and her 14-year-old daughter, Jashoda Debbarma, whose bodies were discovered in sacks floating in Dumboor Lake on November 2. The mother-daughter duo had gone missing from their Tingharia home on October 23.
Upon learning of the arrest, villagers gathered at Birganj police station on Tuesday, pressuring the police to surrender the accused to them. When the authorities resisted, the angry crowd attempted to attack the officers, escalating the situation. In response, police fired tear gas shells and employed mild lathi charges to disperse the mob, resulting in injuries to a few villagers.
The accused, along with his wife, was subsequently transferred to Raishyabari police station amid heightened security measures. The incident highlights the community’s strong emotions surrounding the tragic double murder case.
