Syria Releases Preliminary Results from Indirect Parliamentary Elections

Must Read

Syria released preliminary results today from indirect parliamentary elections held yesterday, marking a key step in its post-Assad political transition. Around 6,000 regional representatives selected candidates from pre-approved lists to fill 119 of 210 seats, while President Ahmed al-Sharaa will appoint the remaining 70.

Authorities suspended voting in areas outside government control, leaving 21 seats vacant. Six women and several religious and ethnic minorities were elected. Critics raised concerns over the tightly controlled process, lack of transparency, and short appeal window.

Officials cited post-war instability and incomplete population data as reasons for the indirect system. The final makeup of the assembly, especially the appointed members, will shape the inclusivity of Syria’s first parliament since Bashar al-Assad’s removal.
