Switzerland striker Breel Embolo faces uncertainty ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after being denied entry to the United States due to a review of his ESTA authorization. Swiss football officials are working with US authorities to resolve the issue before Switzerland’s crucial Group B matches.

Switzerland’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 have suffered a significant setback after star striker Breel Embolo was denied entry to the United States, casting doubt over his immediate participation in the tournament.

The Swiss national team departed for Los Angeles on Tuesday ahead of their opening World Cup fixtures, but Embolo was notably absent from the traveling squad. According to reports from Swiss media, the 29-year-old forward was prevented from boarding the flight after his Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) status was unexpectedly placed under review by US authorities.

The development comes as a major concern for Switzerland, who are scheduled to play their first two Group B matches in the United States. Embolo has been one of the country’s most influential attacking players in recent years and is considered a key figure in coach Murat Yakin’s plans for the tournament.

Reports suggest the review of Embolo’s ESTA authorization is linked to a legal case dating back several years. The striker was convicted in 2023 in relation to multiple threats made during an altercation that reportedly occurred in 2018. Although he received a suspended fine and subsequently appealed the conviction, the appeal was unsuccessful.

The Swiss Football Association (SFA) confirmed the situation in an official statement and emphasized that efforts are underway to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

“Unfortunately, Breel Embolo is currently unable to travel to the United States with the team,” the federation stated. “His ESTA authorization had been approved until this morning. However, at 10:30 a.m., we were informed that his ESTA application had been placed under further review.”

Despite the setback, Swiss football officials remain optimistic that the striker will soon be cleared to travel and join his teammates.

The SFA added that it is maintaining direct communication with the relevant US authorities and expects a positive outcome. Officials indicated that Embolo could potentially travel later the same day or join the squad within the next 24 hours if the matter is resolved promptly.

Born in Cameroon before moving to Switzerland during childhood, Embolo has represented Switzerland at every major level of international football since the Under-16 team. Since making his senior debut in 2015, he has become one of the country’s most recognizable footballers.

The former Basel and Monaco striker has earned 85 international caps and scored 23 goals for Switzerland. He has participated in two previous FIFA World Cups, in 2018 and 2022, and enjoyed a memorable campaign in Qatar four years ago. During that tournament, he scored twice, including the winning goal against Cameroon, the country of his birth. The achievement made him only the second player in World Cup history to score against his birth nation.

Embolo has also represented Switzerland at Euro 2016, Euro 2020, and Euro 2024, highlighting his importance and consistency at the highest international level.

His recent form has been encouraging. In Switzerland’s final warm-up match before the World Cup, a 4-1 victory over tournament debutants Jordan in St. Gallen, Embolo opened the scoring from the penalty spot and delivered another strong performance.

Switzerland are scheduled to begin their World Cup campaign against Qatar in San Francisco on June 13. They will then face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Los Angeles before concluding the group stage against co-hosts Canada in Vancouver.

The Swiss side has established a reputation for consistency on the global stage, reaching the knockout rounds in each of the last three FIFA World Cups. However, they will be hoping to go further this time after suffering a heavy 6-1 defeat to Portugal in the Round of 16 at the 2022 tournament.

Historically, Switzerland’s best World Cup performances came through three quarterfinal appearances, with the most recent occurring in 1954 when the nation hosted the competition.

For now, the focus remains firmly on resolving Embolo’s travel issue. Swiss fans and team officials alike will be hoping the star forward receives clearance in time to take his place in the squad and help Switzerland pursue a deep run at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
