The Trinamool Congress candidate from the 57-Jubarajnagar assembly constituency Dr. Mrinal Kanti Debath on Saturday filed his nomination for the upcoming bye-elections in the state to be held on June 23.
Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev and other TMC leaders of the North Tripura District led a mass rally on Saturday amid heavy rains to accompany the party candidate for filing of nomination paper.
Debnath is contesting against the BJP candidate Malina Debnath, while the CPI-M fielded Shailendra Chandra Nath in the seat. Congress has not yet nominated candidate for the seat.
After submission of nomination paper of the candidate Sushmita Dev said on Saturday that the TMC was the only alternative party to the ruling BJP. She described the change in leadership in the state as a sign of the ruling BJP’s “failure”. “Perhaps the change of CM shows that the party like BJP has lost all trust and faith of the people of Tripura,” she said.
She said, “The sudden change of CM also shows that even BJP understood that their acceptability had gone down and people wanted a change. Tripura’s people want an alternative and they want a powerful leader who can work for them.”
Urging the voters to support the TMC, Dev said, “Trinamool is the only alternative. Other parties have lost their credence before the public. Our leader Mamata Banerjee is the fiercest face of opposition in Tripura as well as at the national level.”
Dev also blamed the Congress and the CPI-M and said, “People of this state had seen how this two parties worked when they were in government. As far as Opposition parties are concerned, people of Tripura have given many opportunities to the Left but were so disappointed that they voted in BJP in 2018 hoping for a change. Congress cannot be an alternative because its own stature does not inspire confidence among people. Tripura’s people do not want to waste their votes by voting for Congress. The only new alternative is TMC”.
“We are constantly working towards liberating people from BJP’s misgovernance and ensuring justice,” Dev said.
Dev also said that Debnath is “a well-educated and thorough gentleman” who would receive the support of the public.
