Opposition Congress on Monday organized an impressive rally as the two candidates Sudip Roy Barman for 6- Agartala and Asish Kumar Saha for 8- Bordowali constituencies marched to submit their nomination papares to the concerned Returning Officers.
Roy Barman submitted nomination to Returning officer Dr Sailesh Yadav while Asish Kumar Saha submitted nomination to Returning Officer Asim Saha.
Senior congress leaders including PCC president Birajit Sinha and others accompanied the two candidates as the party supporters crowded the road and music systems blared.
Congress is giving behind the curtain support to the TIPRA Motha in 46 Surma Constituency while the party fielded Sushmita Nath in 57 Jubarajnagar.
Both the city constituencies that are going to by polls -6 Agartala and 8 Bordowali assume significance as not only the both Congress candidates Sudip Roy Barman and Asish Kumar Saha till recently were BJP leaders- in fac Roy Barman himself being a minister- but also for the fact in both the urban seats results would indicate the mood of the electorate that would again be definitely reflected in 2023 Assembly elections.
Though there are other parties like CPM and TMC in the fray, and the contest is thus multicornered, but in reality the fight would be essentially between the BJP and Congress in these two seats. In Bordowali Dr Manik Saha, the incum, bent Chief Minister is fighting as he would have to return to the assembly to retain his position. The BJP would leave no stone unturned to ensure the seat. On the other hand Congress would not mind to come to an understanding with other parties to ensure the defeat of Dr Saha as it would be the biggest kill in the game—a sitting Chief Minister going down. On the other hand Sudip Roy Barman happens to be the face the Congress at this moment in Tripura and his victory is hugely important to go ahead for the assembly elections. Keeping all these in mind, there were even indications that to rout the BJP in these two seats Congress may even go for some sort of backdoor understanding with the political parties—even CPM and Forward Block which is essentially a CPM B team.
