Pranajit Singha Roy, Minister IT, Finance, Planning & Coordination launched the free Wi-Fi facility for 19 Govt Colleges under phase 1 at Netaji Subhash Mahavidyalaya, Udaipur  on Monday as part of the Digital Tripura initiative.

The launching event was organised by Directorate of Information Technology, Government of Tripura. In 19 colleges more than 55000 students are projected to be benefitted from this initiative

With a total investment of about Rs. 12.32 crore under the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment, this initiative is being executed in phased manner. The 1st (first phase) has successfully established a secured and free Wi-Fi network with a high-speed internet backbone (100 Mbps) in 19 government degree colleges, while the second phase aims to expand this connectivity to an additional 11 colleges. This systematic rollout ensures that each institution is adequately equipped to support digital learning and engagement.

Digital Tripura is an ambitious initiative by the state government aimed at leveraging technology to enhance governance, improve public service delivery, and promote digital literacy throughout the state. The initiative focuses on implementing e-governance platforms to ensure transparency and accessibility for citizens, expanding digital infrastructure to support online education and services, and promoting capacity building programs to equip residents with essential digital skills.

As part of these initiatives, the government is making significant strides in enhancing the educational framework by implementing a secured and free Wi-Fi network across all government colleges. In collaboration with the Department of Higher Education, the Directorate of Information Technology aims to provide free internet access on campuses, enabling students to explore a wide range of educational resources and online content. This initiative creates a secure online environment, ensuring that students can safely access vital information for their academic pursuits. Additionally, college administrative staff, employees, students, and guests will have shared access to wireless network resources, supporting the Government of Tripura’s mission of teaching, research, and outreach.

The implementation of this Wi-Fi network is expected to have a transformative impact on education in Tripura. By fostering digital literacy and collaboration, the initiative empowers students to engage more deeply with their studies and develop essential skills for the future workforce. Furthermore, it addresses the digital divide, ensuring equitable access to technology for all students. Ultimately, this initiative aligns with the state’s commitment to creating a more informed and digitally literate youth, paving the way for a brighter future.
