Several Sri Lankan leaders visited former President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Welikada Prison Hospital on Saturday, a day after he was remanded on charges of misusing public funds.
Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sajith Premadasa and other opposition figures called on the 76-year-old, who was admitted to the prison hospital last night on medical advice. Wickremesinghe had been arrested after questioning by the Criminal Investigation Department and produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court. His bail plea, citing health issues and his wife’s cancer treatment, was rejected.
The case stems from a 2023 London trip for his wife’s PhD graduation, where investigators allege nearly 50,000 dollars in state funds were spent without official purpose.
A special meeting of party leaders from the UNP, SJB, SLPP, SLFP and SLMC convened this afternoon on Flower Road to discuss the situation and future political moves. Mahinda Rajapaksa was also present at the discussions.
