The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) announced a 20 percent reduction in electricity tariffs for the first six months of 2025. The revised rates take effect from midnight tonight. The tariff cuts aim to ease the financial burden on consumers and businesses amid Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic recovery.

Domestic users will benefit from a 20 percent reduction, while places of worship see a 21 percent cut. Hotels and industries receive significant relief with reductions of 31 percent and 30 percent, respectively. The PUCSL stated that the move aligns with its commitment to ensure affordability and support key sectors of the economy. The decision is expected to stimulate economic growth while providing relief to households and businesses grappling with rising costs.

Rising cost of living had been a key factor in the recent elections in which President Dissanayake’s alliance, NPP, secured a landslide victory. Electricity tariffs had been raised to almost triple the earlier rates in 2023, causing significant distress among the public.
