Simon Helberg celebrates 20 years of friendship with Jim Parsons, sharing a heartfelt tribute to his former The Big Bang Theory co-star Sheldon Cooper.
Actor Simon Helberg has marked two decades of friendship with his The Big Bang Theory co-star Jim Parsons by sharing a heartfelt tribute on social media. Helberg, widely recognized for playing the eccentric and lovable aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz in the hit sitcom, posted a picture with Parsons as he reflected on the 20 years since the two actors first met.
In his Instagram post, Helberg celebrated Parsons, who portrayed the brilliant but socially awkward physicist Sheldon Cooper throughout the long-running comedy series. Describing Parsons as a “gem of a human,” Helberg expressed his surprise at how quickly two decades had passed since their first meeting.
“How has it been 20 years since I met this gem of a human?” Helberg wrote alongside the photograph, highlighting the lasting bond formed between the two actors during their years working together.
The friendship between Helberg and Parsons developed during their time on The Big Bang Theory, which became one of television’s most successful sitcoms. The series originally centered on five characters living in Pasadena, California. They included physicists Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper, Penny, an aspiring actress and waitress, aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz and astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali.
Helberg’s portrayal of Howard became one of the show’s most recognizable performances. His character initially stood apart from Sheldon, Leonard and Raj because he was an engineer rather than a physicist, but his friendships and relationships gradually became central to the series. As the show progressed, Howard’s personal life, career and marriage to microbiologist Bernadette Rostenkowski became important parts of the storyline.
Beyond The Big Bang Theory, Helberg has built a diverse acting career. He appeared as Cosmé McMoon in the film Florence Foster Jenkins, a performance that earned him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture. He also appeared as a cast member on the sketch comedy series MADtv during its eighth season.
His other film credits include Old School, Good Night, and Good Luck, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, A Serious Man and Annette, further demonstrating his work across comedy and drama.
Parsons, meanwhile, became internationally recognized for his portrayal of Sheldon Cooper, a role he played from 2007 to 2019. His performance earned him four Primetime Emmy Awards, while he also received a Golden Globe Award and a Tony nomination during his career.
Parsons expanded his television work with projects including The Normal Heart, Special and the Netflix miniseries Hollywood, in which he played talent agent Henry Willson. His Broadway career also gained attention following his debut in Larry Kramer’s acclaimed play The Normal Heart.
The success of The Big Bang Theory eventually developed into a wider multimedia franchise. One of its most prominent extensions was Young Sheldon, a prequel focusing on Sheldon Cooper’s childhood. Parsons returned to the character in the series as the adult Sheldon, providing narration.

As The Big Bang Theory progressed, several supporting characters became increasingly important, including neuroscientist Amy Farrah Fowler, microbiologist Bernadette Rostenkowski and comic book store owner Stuart Bloom.
Helberg’s latest tribute to Parsons therefore offers a glimpse into the personal friendship that grew behind one of television’s most popular ensembles. Two decades after first meeting, the actors continue to share a connection shaped by their memorable years together on The Big Bang Theory.
