Veteran composer Shankar Mahadevan reveals why famous playback singers often forget the lyrics to their own superhit songs during live concerts, sharing fascinating behind-the-scenes musical insights alongside singer Shaan during the 25th anniversary celebration of the cult classic Dil Chahta Hai.

It is a phenomenon music enthusiasts and concertgoers around the world have witnessed time and again: a seasoned playback icon takes the stage to perform a chart-topping anthem, only to stumble over the very words that defined their career. While audiences often assume it comes down to stage fright, fatigue, or memory lapse, National Award-winning composer and singer Shankar Mahadevan has offered a sharp, psychological explanation for why vocalists routinely draw blanks on their own mega-hits.

The revelation emerged during a special conversational reunion organized by Spotify to mark the historic milestone of Dil Chahta Hai, a defining cultural masterpiece in modern Indian cinema. Sitting alongside his longtime musical partners Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa, as well as celebrated playback singer Shaan and host Meiyang Chang, Mahadevan unpacked the artistic mindset that dictates a performer’s memory on stage.

The Psychology of Artistic Priorities

When Shaan openly admitted his tendency to blank out on familiar verses, Mahadevan immediately broke down the cognitive shift that takes place once a track transitions from the recording booth to public stardom.

“I will tell you why,” Mahadevan explained candidly. “Because you have already sung that song. The song has become popular. It has become a super hit. And you have already moved ahead. So that’s no longer a priority. That’s already done.”

Mahadevan emphasized that the creative adrenaline driving a vocalist peaks during the embryonic phase of a composition. “If it’s a new song, a new melody, a new set of lyrics, you will be 100% focused. And you will see to it like, ‘I shouldn’t make a mistake’. Then there will be no mistakes there,” he observed, illustrating how subconscious comfort allows an artist’s concentration to drift once a song enters their permanent catalog.

Shaan’s Hilarious Encounter with Javed Akhtar

Corroborating Mahadevan’s theory with self-deprecating humor, Shaan recounted an anecdote where his improvised verses caught the sharp ear of legendary lyricist Javed Akhtar.

“I have a very funny story on this,” Shaan chuckled. “During a session, I started making my own lyrics. And then I went to Javed Akhtar sahab, very coy, and I asked him, ‘Is everything okay?’ He said, ‘You are writing it yourself.’ So I didn’t understand what he meant. He said, ‘No, no, these are all your songs.’ I said, ‘But these weren’t my lyrics.’ He then said, ‘You made your own lines.'”

25 Years of a Cinematic Watershed

The discussion took place against the reflective backdrop of Dil Chahta Hai, Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut that permanently restructured Bollywood’s creative paradigm. Depicting the nuanced dynamics of urban camaraderie, romance, and youthful independence, the film turned its iconic Goa road trip into an enduring rite of passage for successive generations.

Equally revolutionary was the sonic blueprint crafted by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. By fusing rock grooves, acoustic folk, dynamic synthesizer arrangements, and classical Indian sensibilities, the trio departed radically from the orchestral conventions of late-1990s film music. Two and a half decades on, the soundtrack remains an essential touchstone of contemporary Indian culture—even if the artists who brought it to life occasionally need a lyric sheet on stage.
