Kolkata/IBNS: In another courtroom setback for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday allowed junior doctors carnival rejecting Kolkata Polices imposition of Section 163 of BNSS in the central part of the city.
The police had earlier denied permission to the junior doctors, erected guardrails blocking roads in RR Avenue in downtown Kolkata.
The junior doctors called the carnival- dubbed as Droh Carnival- as a part of their demand for justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkatas RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August.
Striking down the polices order, the High Court said rallies cant be stopped citing democratic rights.
The doctors are also demanding safety and security at hospitals, removal of certain officials from their posts and elimination of threat culture at various government medical institutions.
The carnival was not given permission on a day Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be present at the Durga Puja carnival which will be held at Red Road, which is within a kilometer from Esplanade where several junior doctors are on hunger strike.
Days ago, the West Bengal government had faced a similar setback in the courtroom after the Calcutta High Court released nine people on bail after they were arrested for giving the We Want Justice slogan at a Durga Puja pandal.
RG Kar case
Though Kolkata Police was quick to arrest civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy in connection with the incident, West Bengal junior doctors suspect there are more than one behind the incident.
The case is currently being probed by the CBI under the monitoring of the Supreme Court.
The CBI has arrested ex-RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, who was already in custody for alleged financial irregularities in the hospital, and a cop in connection with the case.
Prior to CBIs investigation, the state administration came under the scanner over its alleged cover-up, delay in filing FIRs, demolition work near the crime scene, posting of Ghosh to the same post at another college after his resignation from RG Kar.
In its first chargesheet, the CBI has named Sanjoy Roy as the main accused.
The crime has triggered widespread outrage across the country. Junior doctors of West Bengal continued ceasework for over 40 days in two phases demanding justice for the victim and safety for the medics.
