Sepahijala district witnesses a major development boost as Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha inaugurates the new Sonamura SDM office and multiple infrastructure projects, enhancing administrative services, education facilities, and public welfare for over 3.25 lakh residents across the region.
Sepahijala district is poised to enter a new era of administrative and infrastructural advancement with the inauguration and foundation stone laying of several crucial projects on Monday. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha will preside over the landmark programme, marking a significant milestone in the district’s development journey.
The highlight of the event is the inauguration of the newly constructed Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office building at Sonamura. This much-awaited administrative complex, designed to modernize public service delivery in the region, will serve as the central venue from where the Chief Minister will also virtually inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for multiple projects spread across Sonamura and Bishalgarh sub-divisions.
According to officials, the Chief Minister will launch three additional construction projects across Sonamura sub-division and inaugurate 14 newly built government office buildings. Adding to the transformative push is the inauguration of the new school building of Shekerkot Class XII School in the Bishalgarh sub-division. All virtual ceremonies will be conducted from the premises of the new SDM office building.
A large gathering of local residents, senior district officials, state administration members, and various public representatives is expected to attend the event. The programme will take place in front of the newly constructed two-storey administrative complex, which now stands as one of the most prominent government structures in the area.
Originally scheduled for November 28, the inauguration ceremony had to be postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. The rescheduled event will now be held on December 9, drawing renewed enthusiasm and anticipation among the people of Sepahijala district.
A Long-Awaited Project Finally Completed
The history of the Sonamura SDM office dates back to the early 1950s, with the original building constructed between 1950 and 1955. For decades, the need for expansion grew steadily due to rising administrative demands. However, despite repeated proposals over nearly 40 years, no substantial progress was achieved, leaving the region’s administrative infrastructure lagging behind.
The turning point came in 2018 after the formation of the new government, when stalled proposals were revived and given priority. Foundation stone for the new SDM office building was laid by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on January 2, 2023, marking the beginning of a long-overdue infrastructural upgrade.
The new building features 49 rooms across two floors, providing ample space for various government departments that will operate from the premises. Apart from housing the SDM office, several allied departments are set to begin functioning from the new facility, enabling more efficient coordination and enhanced public service delivery.
Officials stated that the building has been constructed under the Rural Development Department using the state’s special fund for 2022–23. The project, estimated at Rs. 6,64,49,423, was initially expected to be completed between January 2, 2023 and January 2, 2024. However, construction extended beyond the scheduled period due to several unforeseen challenges. Despite this, the contractor ultimately completed the project ahead of the extended completion deadline.
Transformative Impact for Over 3.25 Lakh People
The newly inaugurated SDM Office aims to significantly improve administrative efficiency and accessibility for nearly 3.25 lakh residents across the region. This includes citizens under Melaghar Municipal Council, Sonamura Nagar Panchayat, Kathalia, Boxanagar, Mohanbhog, and Nalchar Block Panchayat areas. Additionally, 17 village committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), spread across Boxanagar, Nalchar, Sonamura, and Dhanpur Assembly constituencies, are also set to benefit from the upgraded infrastructure.
With modern facilities and wider departmental integration, the government anticipates faster processing of public services, reduction in administrative delays, and improved coordination between district-level institutions.
Chief Minister’s Vision for Accelerated Growth
Speaking about the development initiatives, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed optimism about the transformative impact of the new projects.
“Sepahijala district is set to enter a new phase of accelerated development with the launch of several key projects. Marking a significant milestone in the district’s growth journey, new infrastructure initiatives in healthcare, education, and minority welfare are ready for inauguration,” Dr. Saha said.
He further added that the projects align with the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, and will enhance quality of life while unlocking new opportunities for sustained progress and prosperity in the region.
