Sensex tumbles 956 points, Nifty sheds 306 points in afternoon trade

Benchmark domestic equity indices witnessed a sharp decline and were trading around 1.3% lower during the afternoon session. The Sensex tumbled 956 points to 72,939, while the Nifty shed 306 points to 22,835 when reports last came in.
In the broader market at the National Stock Exchange, the Midcap 100 index fell 1.4%, while the Smallcap 100 index slid 1.6% a short while ago. On the sectoral front, all sectors were trading in the red, as a broad-based sell-off was seen across the board.
